Like - Foley Artists
The most fun part of making movies is the fact that at the very end of many of them, a person gets in a room with the most bizarre assortment of things you’ve ever seen and records their noises. That person is known as a foley artist. Their job is to create all kinds of sounds including breaks, bangs, twists, caresses, pops, flicks, throws, scratches, taps, and you name it. Thunderstorm outside? Better get out the big foil. Broken bone from a vicious kick? Snap some celery stalks. In some ways, foley is more like sonic alchemy than art. The practice asks you to hear the world with imaginative detail. Imagine walking through the produce aisle and constructing the sounds of a fight scene with various snaps and splats, while everyone else is thinking about what’s for dinner. It’s on a different level, not that I know what level that is. Anyway, the next time you’re watching a movie and you hear a particularly fun sound, try to imagine where it came from.
