Reno is cool. That’s the simplest way to say it. It’s not new. It’s not that nice. It’s small and there isn’t really any world class anything there, except the vibe. Reno is a weird place, the way Austin or Portland used to be. It’s also cheap. You can have a grand old time in Reno for a third of the cost of Las Vegas, and you won’t feel like you’re in an adult Disneyland. Reno is real. It’s the kind of place where a guy introduces himself to you as Bubba and you don’t feel like you’re getting put on. It’s the kind of place where you smoke in a bar and think that maybe that’s not such a bad thing. There’s a certain lawlessness to Reno, even when everyone is following the rules. The Lyft driver who took me to my hotel put it this way: “People in Reno, and Nevada as a whole, really like freedom. They respect that actions have consequences but they want to have the choice. Why should one person ruin everything for the rest of us?”1 I get what he was talking about. I was there to see a certain side of Reno, which was what we needed for our bachelor party. But the next time I go, I want to see more of what The Biggest Little City In The World has to offer. I want to rent a car, try the Basque restaurants, and maybe even go hiking. It’s a wonderful place that is also a testament to the fact that latest isn’t always the greatest.
This answer was in response to me being shocked that some bars never close in Reno.
