Maybe I’m starting to lose it but buying Girl Scout Cookies has gotten worse in recent years. That’s not the kind of thing I think you’re supposed to notice. But I also think I’m right. Girl Scouts selling cookies should be the most pleasant capitalist experience you’ll ever have. It’s a perfect and lovely ritual. You see the Girl Scouts as you walk into the store and make a mental note for later. Once you’ve checked out, you walk up to the table and help a young girl build her confidence and support her troupe with a few boxes of Thin Mints. What a wonderful trade. This is an interaction that society got right, for awhile anyway. Recently, I feel like the adults have been much more in charge. As opposed to sitting behind the Girl Scouts with a blanket over their leg, they are working to close deals and even organize spreadsheets. I saw someone posting a link on their Instagram story to place an order for their niece. This is all in an effort to be helpful but how much help are these girls supposed to need? What kind of costs are involved with the Girl Scouts these days such that parents feel compelled to cut boardroom deals? Is it about sparing some girls the potential of rejection from people they don’t know? Is it some kind of modern parental psychosis in which you need to prove your family is the best? Or is it what happens when parents feel overworked and don’t want to spend their time sitting outside stores? Whatever it is, it’s a clear sign that something’s gone wrong.
