Communicating on the internet isn’t just about what you say but also about how you say it. The internet has spawned countless linguistic creations and stylistic shifts. Some of them are great, some of them are less than that; however, it’s all a matter of personal taste. Writing in all lowercase is an internet choice that I don’t abide by. It’s one thing to text in all lowercase, which is fine. It’s another to write entirely in all lowercase, particularly for blogs and newsletters like the ones you find on Substack. It’s a casual thing and signals that you’re online enough to take the internet only semi-seriously, though seriously enough to bother signaling such a thing. Because make no mistake, writing in all lowercase is a choice. It’s not malicious, but it is annoying. Capitalization, like punctuation, makes writing clearer, which in turn makes reading clearer. It’s a virtuous cycle that is worth maintaining, especially on screens where comprehension plummets. It may not signal a certain nonchalance to certain people, but it might suggest you learned to type from Mavis Beacon to others.
