There’s a cheese and snack shop by my house called Cheese & Crack, which I believe is supposed to be a funny play on Cheese & Crackers. Except instead of crackers it’s crack because, presumably, it’s so good you can’t stop as though you were “smoking crack,” which the average patron of this shop has almost assuredly not done. But they’re not the only ones making this joke. A lot of people are, which is a bit shocking considering that it’s 2023 and these jokes stopped being funny well over a decade ago. If there are, that message must have not gotten around to everyone, including people who probably should have cared about Milk Bar’s mea culpa. One recent popular turn in the life of this phrase is to say that you have “crackhead energy.” Again, most of the people who claim to have “that energy” are speaking ignorantly from both a personal and sociological point of view. So why does it remain? Is it a vestige of Chapelle’s Show that has been passed down by the people who made Dave quit? Have our collective tastes really evolved so little? Based on the long lines outside the Cheese & Crack, it certainly seems so…
