Yesterday I sat on a bunch of couches and the real takeaway I had was that whoever is making couches deeper and deeper needs to be stopped. It’s bad enough that there is an increasing trend to make couches lower and lower but it’s the depth that’s the real problem because depth doesn’t make ergonomical sense. When you sit on a deep couch, you sink into it. Instead of sitting in a series of near-right angles, you sit in this sloped fashion like the deflated girl from those anti-weed PSAs in the 2000s. It’s not comfortable to have a conversation with a craned neck and your feet dangling from the floor. Mind you, I’m 6’2”. Based on a bell curve of height, I shouldn’t be affected by these depths of despair but I certainly am. A deep couch should be made for someone like me. Unfortunately, all that happens when I get on one is that I can feel vertebrae slink into another as my discs collapse. Worst of all, deep couches are hard to get up from as you shimmy your butt to the front and then find your bearings to stand. Some might say that’s an opportunity to get a little extra work out in but we all know that’s nothing but a lie.

It's a conspiracy with big pillow industry. Like, this couch is literally unusable unless you buy 45 pillows for it.
