Don’t Like - Gaudy Diamond Rings

Love may not be a competition, but displays of affection certainly can be. There is no display that’s more significant than the wedding ring. It’s a present and a promise rolled into one. Unlike a fancy car or a house, which both most likely cost more, the wedding ring (hopefully) means more. Often, that means it will cost more too. For many people, it isn’t enough to get something nice. You’ve got to get something huge and filled with lots of diamonds. It’s tasteless competition in the most unimaginative way. The practical equivalent of walking into a jeweler and saying, “I want to prove I spent good money.” They feel American in the worst sort of monotonous suburban way. An imitation of life. And yet somehow, they’re not as bad as those alternative metal wedding bands some men choose to wear.
