I’m something of a known entity at my local Taco Bell around 3:00 a.m., or maybe I was once told that I was one of the better customers the cashier had on a given night. But either way, what’s important here is that I was there. It’s important because fast food is made to be fast and easy. That is its existential purpose. That makes stretching the bounds of convenience by ordering fast food through a delivery app on your phone a lethargic step too far. The world is only meant to bend to our needs so far… It might seem like a responsible thing to order fast food if you’re too drunk to drive, but if know that about yourself then you should also have a pizza in your freezer. Or you should cook some eggs and/or throw whatever leftovers you have together. If those options aren’t available, you should probably just drink some water and then go to sleep. What isn’t fair is to ask someone who is trying to make money doing deliveries to go sit in a super long line burning gas and losing out on other trips to bring you food 30-40 minutes after you placed the order. It’s also not fair to the food, which will arrive at your door cold and steamed. That food needs to be eaten fresh off the press, particularly Taco Bell’s Beefy Five Layer burrito. It’s a lose-lose-lose-lose situation for all involved. It’s better to find out what your local late-night delivery options are and order from one of them.
