Don’t Like - Movie Characters Throwing Up When Something Bad Happens
The way some people feel about an extra staring into the camera is how I feel when characters throw up in response to something bad happening in a movie. Like ok sure, what just happened was really intense and messed up. We all saw it, that’s how movies work. Oh? But what’s that you say? There’s a conveniently placed trash can in the area? How lovely. A reasonably important character should probably go throw up in it. That would really underscore how horrible the bad thing that just happened was because it was really, really awful. It’s almost as though if someone didn’t throw up in response to what just happened then it would be like if it wasn’t bad at all, you know? Ok, clearly I don’t. I can’t stand this device—if it even qualifies as one. It’s one of the few things that will really take me out of a movie. It feels like the most generic way to have a character respond. Like, oh yeah, our audience has thrown up before. They’ll totally “feel” this visceral artistic decision. And yet, there are exceptions to every rule. Triangle of Sadness did vomiting quite well. Perhaps the lesson there is to go for broke when vulgarity is at stake.
