I don’t know what it is but if I’m ordering sushi, I will never order a Philadelphia Roll. Cream cheese and smoked salmon in rice should be a winning combination. Lord knows it is on a bagel. But in sushi roll? Named after the city of Philadelphia? Really? I was born in Los Angeles and have disavowed the California Roll (unless it’s made with real crab in which case they can be pretty delicious). That counts for something right? Can it count for this? Please? I mean, there’s no shame in liking a Philadelphia Roll. The roll itself even has an interesting story. It was created by a woman named Madame Saito at the Tokiohead House, which is a Japanese restaurant in Philadelphia. One day she went to a Jewish’s couples house and was served bagels and lox. From there, she got the idea to put smoked salmon and cream cheese into a sushi roll and call it “The Philly Roll.” That’s a great story. The kind of cultural blending that makes America a truly wonderful place at times. But alas, even the kindest and sweetest human interest stories are not a guarantee for your (my) taste buds.

I'm a big fan of the hole in the middle of the bagel that has the glob of cream cheese and to me that's what a Philly Roll delivers on. If it's on the menu 9 times out of 10 I'm ordering it.
Also imitation crab is fire.
