Like - Apropos
Apropos of only its singular charm as a word, I’ve been thinking about apropos a lot recently. It’s a word that I’ve only ever heard throughout my life. It’s a nice thing to say when you need to start a conversation or if you desperately want to change topics. The word’s cadence is vital to its utility. Imagine if it was pronounced “A-pro-pos” as opposed to “ah-pro-pos.” Just listen to how silly that sounds. You could never use that word and come off as a serious person. I suppose those types of mispronunciations exist for all kinds of words, but some certainly have to be worse than others. Anyway, luckily for me I’ve always heard it pronounced correctly. However, that didn’t help me spell it when I was reaching for it the other week. I’m not sure what my original attempt was but that old familiar red line immediately set me straight. Something about that felt funny for a word that’s supposed to be appropriate for a specific situation. How un-apropos of it.
