A deck of cards is one of the simplest ways to experience real human connection with the highs and lows of winning and losing, too. A deck of cards is one of the most wonderfully inventive things humans have ever created. Supposedly, there are 1,000 to 10,000 card games out there, which means there is absolutely one that you’ll like to play. This past week, I was lucky to play Cribbage and Euchre. Cribbage is that weird game with a board and pegs that involves a lot of counting to 15 and a bunch of other rules that feel fake when you learn them but make sense once you internalize them. Euchre is a team-based trick-taking game, much like Spades, but uses a smaller deck of 9 through Ace and the trump suit changes every hand. Both games were as fun as they were frustrating—though for different reasons—because card games are social. There’s nothing like getting a bad hand as your opponent gets a great one but that’s ok because the best part of playing cards is playing them with other people. That's why the app on your phone is never that satisfying. So whether you’re playing Poker, Whist, Rummy, Gin, Bridge, or whatever else, you get to sit around a table and go hand-to-hand with another person. You learn a lot about someone when you play cards with them. Yes, you get to see how risk-averse and cunning they are but you also get to see how patient they are while they teach and how open they are as they learn. Once you reach the point of proficiency so that you’re truly playing the game, the fun begins— bringing a new relationship with it.
