I grew up in a no-water house in upstate New York. My mom drank coffee; my dad drank Diet Coke; I drank both. Sometimes in the summer we had Snapple. Maybe it was because our water was from a well and tasted kind of weird. Mostly, I think we preferred to be strongly caffeinated. Now, even though I try to regularly drink my non-well water, I still stock a fridge drawer—the 'crisper' one that I believe is intended for vegetables—full of Diet Coke. It’s wonderful to come home to the cold, metallic sweetness of a DC. I mean, life is hard. There are a lot of bad habits and vices to conquer (drugs, procrastination, etc.), and a lot of things we should all be doing for ourselves to feel good and live well (flossing, regular exercise, etc.). But I think one of the softest of vices, and greatest of indulgences, is a cold Diet Coke in the comfort of your own home. Keep some in the fridge. Your water-drinking friends will be delighted when they come over for dinner.
