Creativity is a beautiful thing. It sees things that don’t exist and brings them into reality from the nonexistent realms of ideas. Creativity can be a delicate and graceful thing. It can send a shiver down your spine and an immediately defeatist message to your head that you’ll never do anything quite that good. Creativity also brought us Mr. Potato Head, and that’s wonderful. Mr. Potato Head was made by George Lerner, who originally was trying to sell a toy named Mr. Funny Face. It apparently isn’t known where he got the idea from, but supposedly when he was a kid he liked sticking things into vegetables. But who cares how it came about? Creativity isn’t inherently a logical thing, though it can be. That’s what so wonderful about Mr. Potato Head. He is phenomenally creative and his name is so phenomenally obvious. Putting things into a potato to make a face takes a spark, but looking at the face you just made in a potato and going, “Hello, that’s Mr. Potato Head” is so duh. But, also, maybe it’s not. George Lerner could have called Mr. Potato Head something like “Ted” or “Stanley.” But those aren’t original names unlike Mr. Potato Head, which has since inspired other names straightforwardly self-effacing names like Boaty McBoatface. In that light, Mr. Potato Head is a creative treasure all around. Sorry for every doubting you, Mr. Potato Head. My bad.
