Shopping at Nordstrom’s as a man is always a bit of an odd experience. If you don’t go through the right door, you have to wade past all the perfumes, the expansive woman’s shoe section, and the even more expansive clothing section before finding your slice of the store. When you get there, it’s a weird hodgepodge of trendy name brands like Gucci and Hugo Boss but also more modern brands like Balenciaga. Today, the store feels like the mall version Dover Street Market. But whenever I go in it, I’m on the lookout for one thing: Nordstrom Brand products. They’re this weird little cheat code inside an expensive department store filled with annoying brands selling products of dubious quality. Nordstrom Brand is basically an elevated basics product line but not so elevated that it starts to fall into the realm of capitalist camp a la The Row. In fact, Nordstrom Brand is actually pretty reasonable on price. It’s not cheap, but it’s often on sale and the clothes are usually made with 100% natural materials like cotton or wool. They have that weightiness to them that signals true quality. I’m a fan of their polos, long sleeve collared shirts, button downs and sweaters. If you really want to hunt, the vintage is good too. Keep your eye out for the Nordy boat.
