A relatively recent interior design orthodoxy is that overhead lighting is inherently bad. In fact, it’s not only bad but some kind of crime. The idea of having things lit from above is considered to be an aberration. I think that’s fair if you’re talking about large fluorescent lights but that’s far from the only kind. When you rule out overhead lighting you rule out track lighting, can lighting, chandeliers, ceiling fan lighting, dangling globe lights, and plenty of other wonderful overhead lighting options. That is, if you like seeing things. Let’s face it, lamps can only do so much and if you want to push their ability to the max you need to have lots of them. That might make for nice interior design but it also requires a lot of careful staging and then a tedious amount of switching on and off. A couple well set up overhead lights can provide much more light with much less effort. So, ¿por qué no los dos?

Plus, the number of cords and plugs for lamps? I love our pot lights on dimmers. And our lamps.
Not only a light maven, but a Spanish scholar!
