My favorite video game is the one I play in the car. It’s a game you can’t win but can play forever. There are no rules but there’s a clear goal. My version was released in 2010 and hasn’t been updated since. It’s a lofi game that’s closer to virtual reality than anything that requires a headset. Of course, I’m talking about the energy monitor dash option for the Toyota Prius. This screen has one useful piece of information in it: how many miles you have left. The rest of it is a mysterious representation of the most fundamental elements of driving a hybrid car. It shows you the engine, the convertor, and the battery as the unique elements work as the car drives. When you hit the gas, the battery sends power to the engine in the form of a dotted line. When you brake, the engine sends power into the convertor, which then recharges the battery. That’s pretty basic when you’re coming to or leaving a stop light, but the game gets really fun when you’re driving in traffic. I don’t think the point is to always have a full battery, though that feels good, like you’re saving up a big charge or getting really good mileage. It’s a subtle trick to make you chill out, unless you want to drain the battery by putting the pedal to the metal. You can drive fast in a Prius if you want to. That’s what the true revelation of the game is: finding your driving style.
