A few weeks ago, I went to out to dinner, stopped and had a drink, then came home to an open front door. It was a jarring experience. An open front door is supposed to be an invitation but suddenly it was a threat. The sanctuary of home was left open to who knows. Instantly the questions became who’s there? What’s missing? How did this happen? I was pretty positive I had closed the door but even if I had it might not have mattered. A week or so prior my car had been broken into and whoever did that took some sunglasses. This is surely a product of city living where paranoia is always your neighbor. Something you hear about life in the country and small towns is that leaving a door unlocked is commonplace. No one enters if they’re not welcome but chances are you know everyone anyway, so who wouldn’t be welcome? I imagine that is more of a fantasy than full reality but the ideal remains. Coming back to your front door open shouldn’t be anxiety inducing and yet it is. It’s one of those cases where the world you want to live in isn’t the one you’re living in. Luckily for me, when I got back no one was around and everything was still there. I’ve since started checking the door twice before heading out.
Ok, had to jump into the comments on this one because I've done this on more than one occasion. Now, the second my front door is out of sight after I leave, I immediately am positive I left it wide open. And the oven on broil. And for some reason, every burner on the stove is full blast 🤷♂️
